Yesterday after having to share the crab at Vung Tau, after work I stopped at Dai Thanh Market in San Jose on 420 S. 2nd Street (just S of San Salvador) so I could have one all to myself ;-).
Plenty of Dungeness for $2.29/pound (the tank was packed and stacked full; it was almost gruesome). There were even live Alaskan Kings (I didn't notice the price).
I chose my first Dungeness by pointing, and when the fishmonger lifted it out for inspection, I very visually counted 10 legs and he laughed at me saying something I didn't quite understand. For my 2nd crab I rejected his pick 3 times, asking for a very lively one. The 4th one he showed me was indeed lively and I was too peevish to count the legs so I nodded ok. Of course I get home and it's missing 2 legs.
Each crab was about 2.25 pounds (pre-cooking). Cooked very simply, it tasted very sweet and fresh. Last night was for gluttony's sake. I'll have to go back and buy more for tamarind-recipe-experimenting's sake.
