Courtney's (newly opened in the last month or so on Irving at 8th Ave) is a great place for sandwiches. I had a hearty corned beef on white rye with everything (mayo, choice of cheese, lettuce tomato, mustard, pickles) and it was delicious.

I can already hear whispers of "cheese, lettuce, tomato? sacrilege!" but this place isn't pitching itself as a Jewish deli -- it just wants to be a bright, comfortable neighbourhood sandwich place. Which it does quite nicely.

The corned beef in the sandwich was great - the freshly sliced beef was piled high and had lovely briny flavor. The supple meat was very well toned, holding together with just the right amount of resilence.

One gets a choice of several breads and cheeses for inclusion in the freshly assembled sandwich. The priciest sandwich on the menu was the said warm corned beef version clocking in at an very reasonable $4.90 - even comes with a very sweet tangerine. Other sandwiches are in the lower $4 range. An excellent deal for basic varieties of well prepared sandwiches (liverwurst, tuna, chicken salad, hot pastrami etc...).

I'm so glad to have them in the neighborhood.
