a couple of reasons to go to San Pablo

gordon wing | Apr 16, 200302:47 AM

made my periodic visit to the Grocery Outlet in San Pablo and noticed the little Taqueria in the mini mall.....have had my eye on this place for awhile - it's called Taqueria Mendez- 2031 23rd Street, San Pablo 94806. 510. 215-9065......decided to try a couple of tacos as a sampler and was pleasantly surprised. @ 1.08 - one of cabeza and one of al pastor - both came with onions and cilantro and were made with griddle warmed tortillas - a big radish and a large wedge of lime were thrown in the bag. The cabeza had that gelatinous quality that I like - a squeeze of lime and a bit of the red sauce made it just right. The al pastor was OK but not quite as tasty as some I've had - once again the lime and red sauce brought it to life. A very nice portion of chips with two small containers of their red sauce/salsa were included free. The sauce had some chipotle and/or some charred bits of tomato along with some bits of onion - pretty nice- flavorfull but not screaming. Very working class clientele. Lots of folks were having big bowls of soup and their plate lunches are very reasonably priced....will have to go back to try some more off the menu. And then onto this weeks bargains at the Grocery Outlet: Cape Cod Kettle Chips - Dark Russet variety - 50cents a bag - these chips are cooked longer until they are darker than most chips - very flavorfull and quite a deal at 50 cents! Cabot Farms - Sharp Cheddar and also they have the Extra Sharp Cheddar for $2.99 a pound. There wasn't any yesterday but usually they have Ben & Jerry in the 1.5 pint size for 99cents. If you are going to eat junk food - at least you don't have to pay a lot for it :~)
