S&I Thai is the newish (2 month-old) Thai place next to Reef Cafe. Quite happy with the Yum Nuer -- sliced beef salad with a nice limey acidic dressing, mint, tomato cubes, lettuce, fair amount of large shallots (wished there were more) and a good level of heat, a nice tigery glower. Beef was neither superlatively tender nor stringently tough. Veyr nice folks, who also recommended the Larb Kai (chicken larb) and their chicken noodle soup. Will probably try those next time.
Had another baklava at Reef next door that was better than my last one there. I thought I caught a rosy tint in the sparingly applied syrup on the filo, but not sure. Pistacchio layer was wonderful.
The pizza joint on the corner of the next block on Brighton Ave (sorry not sure of name) is run by Chilean folks and had a sign for empanadas at $1.25. They're made to order and are quite good, the mushroom version filled with a creamy mushroom sauce; want to get the corn and meat versions next. Very delicious pastry crust, primarly on account of freshness. Also had a fairly pleasant papaya shake, which could have been blended a little more, could still catch plenty of fruit shreds. They also serve chicareros, with lomitos (pork) being the counter guy's recommendation. Again, another thing to try next time. (Counte rguy said to bring appetite, it's the size of a large plate.)
