The Counter revisited

zoomchic | Jul 20, 2007 04:59 PM

It's been over a year since my last meal there but after reading all the mixed reviews here, I decided to give it another shot.
I went today at around 2:45pm and there were plenty of tables and counter seats. I chose the counter since I was alone and ordered a 1/3 lb beef with roasted chile peppers, red onion, mixed greens and pickles. I then waited 10 minutes and orderd the 50/50. The waiter kind of chuckled like he knew that was a good idea. It was. Althought the fries/onion strings came out first, the burger came 20 seconds later. Perfect timing.
The burger was ordered medium rare and came as such. After assembling my burger to add a few onion strings, some ranch dressing and a touch of ketchup, it topped out at maybe 3.5-4 inches high, even after smooching it down hard. Most of the bites, I had to turn the burger sideways, but it was delicious. The 50/50 was done nicely too. Crispy even towards the bottom of the bowl. I do remember on my last visit, sogginess prevailed. I couldn't stop eating them even after fininshing the burger. I was tempted to get a shake to go, but I was entirely too stuffed.
When the check came, I was a little surprised it was only $12.88. A good deal, I thought. More than Carls jr, but worth it. Plus, I easily could've had leftovers, but I chose to be a glutton instead.
The only complaint was that it was pretty breezy/chilly with the wall of screened windows. It felt like a ceiling fan was on high right over me. I suppose I could've moved...
