cortelyou report

After months and months of walking by and saying, "I have to try that place," I finally tried Kittitian Cafe, the tiny Carribean place between Ruby and Marlboro. What a pleasant surprise! I had the curry chicken dinner, which came with

* delish cole slaw (freshly made with carrots, raisins, and a generous amount of mayo)
* really good macaroni and cheese -- baked, with a cheesy crust on top, not too much cheese inside, and a little onion for flavor
* sweet fried plantains (standard -- all fried plantains are pretty much equal, in my experience.)

The chicken itself was saucy and spicy, tender, juicy, skinless but on the bone, and cooked with tiny chunks of potato that soaked up lots of the curry flavor. The only disappointment was the peas and rice -- just not that great, and a little greasy. They have yellow rice too. I'll try that next time.

I'm not saying the place is worth traveling to from far and wide, but definitely add it to your (short) takeout list if you live in the neighborhood.

p.s. someone who posted a while back asking about this place had mentioned the fishy smell -- it's still there, but I guess it's inevitable if you cook fish in such a tiny, probably-not-very-well ventilated space.
