The Cornucopia (horn of plenty) of Latin, African and Caribbean restaurants in around East Harlem and El Barrio

These eateries and establishements, there are many more not found on the net, though know your spanish or bring your dictionary.

Any adventurer to disregard these places is losing out.

I have been to one non-discript bar restaurant catering to all non-speakers of English, serving food until 4am. Last time I was in one like this, one of the non-descript bar restaurant, not one word of English was known to any of the more than several people on staff. Still you can eat and drink and enjoy the music, latin or mexican juke box tunes, that the clientele dance to.

The Ochie Cafe Restaurant located at 2163 2nd Ave has nothing on the web about it and I am curious.

As for 116th street, I have long known this is the spot where many Senegal people reside. In these English I imagine is spoken but of course French and Wolof would give you an added advangage in ordering your food.

"A large West African immigrant community has developed in central Harlem with stores, bakeries and cafés along 116th Street west of St. Nicholas Avenue. This community has been called Little Senegal or Le Petit Senegal.[6]"wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/116th_St...

below my Houlaymatou Review I pasted a list that popped up with google, of 116th street West African places.

I went to Houlaymatou middle of 116 btw Madison and Park. This is basically Senegalese, as the server was from there and as far as I could tell most of the dishes were the pan west african kind.

The food I had was lamb, with the usual accompany of slightly cooked onions loaded on top of the meat, similar to Ceebu Jen, or Thiéboudienne.

It was Chevre or goat, as ubiquitous in Senegal as their former colonial country's manufacturer, Peugeot or french bread. Here they are together: http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3118/3...

The portions were huge, thin slabs of long meat cuts, spiced with a very nice flavor, and included the bone, and many I simply ate by hand. This entre was with choice of rice or a very large salad that consisted of romaine lettuce, tomatos and raw onion. THere house dressing was good and seemed to be made in house.

No a bad place but more curious of their stews, so a second trip is needed. Their stews are offered duing lunches, and have a feeling that that is the best time to go.

No Mafe. The fried plantos were so good, similar to this photo: http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4115/4...
