We just recieved some 2002 Cabernet from Victoria, Australia and think it has an off smell that is either corked wine or some type of bottle stench. It arrived from shipment to the retailer we purchased it from in the last month.
The wine had good reviews and reputation.
We opened a bottle a week ago, the evening after pickup, and it had a strong smell that was like a dentist's office - a sharp mouthwash/ether smell. It did not go away after an hour. Yesterday I opened another bottle and the smell is there, but less pronounced. The flavor is a little flat and very herbal - not much berry flavor. After a day the smell was less and the flavor more minty. It does not have the wet dog smell or flavor I have seen in corked wines.
I have not encountered this before and don't know whether I have some bad wine, wine that needs to settle, or this is the style of South Eastern Australian wine. Any thoughts?
