After a light noon breakfast at Auntie Ems on Eagle Rock, I was headed out and about when I noticed that the heat inside the car was unbearable. I remembered a raspado place I had heard about and visited a few years ago **RASPADOS ZACATECAS** at 422 N FORD BLVD, LOS ANGELES, 90022**(60 fwy East, exit Downey Rd., make a left at the exit, make a right on first st., left on Ford Blvd)...so off I went.
The line was out the door, but well worth the wait. Raspados are mexican shaved ice, flavored with a fresh fruit syrup. The variety of flavors and freshness are what makes this place a standout. If my memory serves me, the flavors are:
with the additional flavors of:
Cajeta (Dulce de Leche)
The basic drill is that you pay $2.50, then tell the lady at the counter what flavor you want. You can also mix flavors. Good combinations are coconut/ strawberry and pineapple/lime. They shave the ice, then add the syrup to it, massaging the cup to make sure that all of the ice has a bit of syrup, then top it off with ice and more syrup. I bought a simple coconut raspado, with fresh grated coconut, that made my afternoon just a little more bearable while driving.
