cookware: how much do I *really* need?

I've just started culinary school and intend to take cooking at home very seriously-- starting with replacing my crappy $60-a-set pots and pans.

My intention is not to start an All-Clad vs. Calphalon debate, but I'd love some advice on which basic sizes/shapes I need. I don't want to invest in an entire set; I just want the basics. You know, the same way that you're set for cutlery if you have a really good chef's knife and a paring knife.

Any advice?
