Cooksillustrated French Bread Recipe

I spent an inordanant amount of time this weekend trying to create the CI French bread recipe and found the finished product, after 25 hours of time, not worth the effort. While the crust was good, I found the inside too dense and lacking salt. Has anyone made this recipe with the success that CI clearly states they had?
Or, does anyone have a great recipe for french bread that they could direct me to?
