cooking question--substitution of real ingred's for powdered?

A recipe for braised pork, which sounds good otherwise, calls for 1 tsp "garlic powder" and 1 tsp "onion powder." I despise garlic powder (AKA "bad breath in a jar") and imagine onion powder to be about as bad. Can't I just mince some real onion and garlic? If so, how much? TIA.
