Cooking for a Very Hungry, Slightly Picky Crowd

yumfactr | Feb 22, 201509:03 AM

Hi All!

We will be having a group of friends over soon and I am looking for meal ideas that are not insanely expensive. This is a hungry crowd that drinks a lot and eats a lot. One friend does not like red meat (beef), so that is out. I am thinking snacky yet (and?) filling foods that will go well with Belgian beer and cold weather. I considered a Shepards Pie with lamb, but that is kind of messy I think to eat on your lap. I thought sandwiches, but what kind? This is not the frou frou type crowd and what I could eat and be happy on (i.e. avocado sandwiches, tofu) would potentially lead them to starvation and riots ;) lol.

I was thinking about making the pull-apart cheese bread from Smitten Kitchen as an appetizer, but that seems like it would be better with red-sauce type foods to follow up, so maybe not.

I have a stove/oven, microwave, and a bbq (though I'm not sure about the bbq as it is so cold out and SO might not want to stand out there...)

In reading the above I think I may not be very clear - so essentially looking for filling apps, and sort of a main (but a sandwich would be fine), to feed a hungry crowd :)

Thank you!!!
