Cooked my first duck...YUCK!!!

What did I do do wrong? Followed a recipe consisting of soy sauce, garlic,ginger,sugar,honey s&p. Marinated for 2 hours. Roasted at 350 on a vertical roaster for 2hours. fat still an inch thick under the (mostly) flacid skin. Some also burned!Saved it by shredding it and stirfrying with thai golden curry and veg. Before I ever roast another disaster, should I have poured boiling water over it before starting? Pierced the skin? The recipe I used didn't have much flavour.VERY dissapointing to say the least. Any other fail safe recipes anyone can suggest?(I went on a ton of recipe sites and couldn't find too many...All recipes . recipezaar etc.) HELP ME!!!!!!
