Convoy St. SD's 'Little Asia'

San Diego Asian

There are so many places on Convoy, I thought it deserved it's own thread. Convoy is a treasure trove of Asian gems. Being inspired by yet another winner posted by DrC, Xian Kitchen, with awesome house made noodles, I realized that us hounds may have a lot to offer with chow experiences on Convoy.

Most know that DrC and I enjoy spicy, no 'real' spicy, Asian cuisine.

So where have you been recently on Convoy, sans Super Sergio's, sorry SS this thread is dedicated to Asian cuisine. HH, RH, DrC, DD et al.

Driving by today, I noticed that there are numerous options and regional choices.

Convoy really is quite the amazing strip, from Aero Drive all the way up to Clairemont Mesa Blvd. Somewhere I saw a count of the total number of Asian restaurants that are there, and it was truly impressive.

A few years ago my DH companion and I decided we’d try to go to all of them, but gave up in a short while, not least because there were so many other places around town to try. Meanwhile, a group called Convoy Conquest set out to do the same thing, in 2010, and are still at it. Another group called The Great Convoy Recon also tried, starting in May 2013, and actually did it, finishing in January 2015. They’re also still active, but I don’t think they’ve fully kept up.

It’s really hard to keep up with Convoy. None of us will ever be able to sample every dish from every Asian restaurant there, so it’s good to have blogs and discussion boards with sign posts pointing to the best places, and caution signs for the worst.

Having said that, let’s see how this thread evolves. There’ll probably be overlap with other threads, blogs, and websites, but that’s ok.

As an initial comment, I’ll just say this. Of all the restaurants on Convoy that I’ve personally been to, only two have served food at a spicy level of 10 on my own scale; namely, Koon Thai and Spicy City. At Koon, you can get really hot food if you coax them enough. And at Spicy City I once got a plate with more red chilies on it than any other ingredient (having asked for “extra spicy”).

If you like spicy Chinese, check out a place called Tea Garden. It's a nondescript place at the back of a nondescript strip mall on Convoy. They have what looks a standard menu but my Chinese wife orders certain dishes not on the menu. Order the fried rice 'spicy' and it certainly comes that way (though you won't see it on the English menu). My daughter and I are addicted to the spicy fried rice. They also make a spicy lamb dish that my wife can't quite translate but it's made with a lot of cumin and chilis. If you tell them you like it spicy, they will oblige.

In general, I don't like eating 'in' at Tea Garden. Ultra casual. A lot of Chinese students hang out there drinking bobba tea and studying. Get the food take out. Everything we order there is quite good, though it will be fairly authentic which may or may not cater to one's tastes.

I envy you, having a spouse that can order from the non-english menu. Can you give a 'close' translation of the lamb dish? How is it prepared, does it have veggies etc?

Although not on Convoy, you should try Village Kitchen on Claremont Mesa. Great Hunan.

Been to Raki, enjoyed the ramen.

My wife had been saying 'zi lan' (at least to my ear) and the website refers to it as 'zi ran'. Hence the initial lack of success.

            Also,here's a recipe:

            http://www.taste.com.au/recipes/28681...

None of the ingredients are very exotic and it could be a make-at-home dish for many of us. Though, as in my original post, Tea Garden does this well (and quite spicy to my taste). Looking at the recipe, one can adjust the heat by adding red pepper flakes after it's served. I suspect the aforementioned Xi'an Kitchen would do this well. Though served with noodles.

        2. LOVE Convoy Conquest.

Thanks for starting this thread! My wife is Chinese from Taiwan and we do lot of shopping around Convoy and eat there often. Latest faves:

          - Raki Raki - good ramen but probably the best chicken kara-age I've had anywhere.

          - Nishiki Ramen - very good ramen

          - Tea Garden - see description elsewhere on this thread

          - Dumpling Inn - Very good dumplings and reasonably good xiao long bao. Interesting if not kludgy combination with Shanghai Saloon.

          - Kula Sushi - don't go here for the sushi, though it's not bad if you keep in mind that you're eating 'cheap' sushi at $2.25 per plate. Interesting cultural experience and kids will love it. At least mine do.

I work in the area and therefore quite literally eat here 5 days a week, but all of my recommendations are based off of lunch menus and lunch crowds since I very rarely have dinner here. Anyway…

Ramen: Current favorites are Santouka (although very specifically the toroniku, aka, pig jowl – I’m usually disappointed when I get their regular chashu) and Nishiki (still finding their way, but their bog standard ramen is damn good and nobody here cooks an egg like they do). Both of those restaurants focus on tonkotsu broths, which luckily I prefer. I used to like Yakyudori if I wanted shoyu, but I’ve found that their shoyu broth has gotten increasingly less flavorful and more watered down in taste over time.

Pho: I usually go to Pho Fusion or Pho Y Nyu, but mainly because my work is closer to them. If I don’t mind going out of my way a bit I’ll go to Phuong Trang. Also, there’s a brand-new place called Char House that I really enjoyed – the broth was too sweet (weird for pho), but super beefy and they were not stingy at all with the meatstuffs.

Bo Kho: Admittedly I haven’t tried as much bo kho around here as I would like, but Pho Fusion seems to always get the cook on their meat right, which is always my biggest concern with bo kho. My only problem is that they use so much rice noodle that all the sauce gets absorbed into it.

Korean, non-sundubu: Do Re Mi House is my jam (I go there every week) – walking distance to my work of course helps, but their lunch specials are killer. Get the L2 lunch special – pork rib galbi. It’s pretty much the deal of the century.

Sundubu: Convoy Tofu House (not to be confused with the other Tofu House on Convoy, next to O’brien’s – this Convoy Tofu House is south of Balboa). Their broth is much better than any other sundubu I’ve had in SD, and they have absolutely my favorite kimchi in the world. I need to ask them next time where they source it. I’m a big fan in particular of the mushroom sundubu.

Chinese: I’ve really enjoyed the food at Xi’an Kitchen – those noodles are just fantastic, and their broths are super interesting and unlike anything I’ve had before. I tend to think Dumpling Inn is slightly on the overrated side due to everything else around here being so bad for so long, but of course if you’re dying for XLB you’re still gonna go there. Sam Woo can actually be really damn good if you get the right things, such as the black bean fish or the beef turnip stew.

Thai: I’ve given up on Thai food around here, and in SD in general (I really only eat at Sab-E-Lee and J&T now). I would KILL for someone to open up a shop around here that served even half-decent khao man gai.

Singaporean: Uh, the only place I’m aware of is Red Moon Noodle House, but everything I’ve had there has been quite good. The “Red Moon Beef” is killer – I could eat that all day.

Slightly off-topic, but -- have you been to Sab-E-Lee's sister restaurant, Thai Papaya? If not, you might like to try it sometime. Although they now also serve some of the common Thai dishes, many items on the menu are unusual and hard to find in SD.

In addition to DrC's recs for Thai, Sang Dao is worth trying, been many times. For example, I like that they use ingredients like fresh Thai Eggplant in their curry and their beef larb has lots of 'tasty bits' that I enjoy.

Have had more than once and still suggest: Som Tom Thai, chicken Aom, Yen Ta Fo, and chicken Khao Soi.

They have the same hotness scale as Sab-E-Lee -- as in, serious.

                  Lots of good recs here!

The way you feel about SD's Thai food scene is how I feel about our ramen options. I'd love something other than tonkotsu broth (clear, shoyu broths and tantan is what I prefer). Santouka is my current fall-back, and I need to give Nishiki another go (their tantan is disappointing).

If you're looking for something other than a Tonkotsu Ramen, Yakyudori does a very nice Shio (salt) broth which I consider their specialty. Their Shio has been a consistent standout (besides their Yakitori, of course) ever since they started offering Ramen at their Convoy shop.

The dedication to maintaining their Shio broth is something else, having retooled it more than once. I recall early on a prolonged period of time where they removed it from their menu. Why? They were not able to source the special Japanese salt they needed for their recipe. Now that's integrity for you!

An interesting side story, back when Santouka opened their shop in SD their chef and trainer, who came in to town from their LA shop, would eat at Yakyudori's original Hillcrest shop after his day ended in Kearny Mesa. Over many a discussion they decided to partner together to open Yakyudori's Kearny Mesa shop and add a Ramen menu. I forget his name but that chef left Yakyudori long ago to open up his own Ramen-ya in Orange County with the thought that he'll offer a secret menu that would also have his specialty, the Shio Ramen.

(Why a secret menu? I recall him saying that he'll have to adapt the menu to appeal to locals and westerners but will offer his "secret menu" to offer a more traditional taste to those that know.)

To me Yakitori Taisho ranks well within the top 3-6 range of what we recently had in Japan. We even went to the original Yakyudori in Nagoya. Speaking of Yakyudori, they are opening Yakitori Hino soon on Clairemont Mesa Blvd.
Having had Tsukemen at Rokushina in Tokyo really did confirm that RakiRaki is fairly middlin' at best. Unfortunately, it's the best Tsukemen we have.

It took me awhile, but I finally got over to Shan Xi Magic Kitchen for dinner tonight. This is a nice, medium-size place done in shades of brown and gray, with a few Chinese-style decorations and ceiling lamps. Brisk service and fast response from the kitchen, even though the place was almost full.

Based on comments by Ipsedixit elsewhere, I ordered Liang Pi and Biang-Biang Noodles. The Liang Pi was my favorite of the two, with outstanding noodles, fresh veggies, and chunks of some soft something-or-other, maybe tofu. This would make a refreshing small meal on a hot day, as the noodles are served cold. Mildly spicy “broth” on the bottom, but I added a little black vinegar to give it a bit more edge.

The Biang-Biang noodles were good, although I might have been more impressed if I hadn’t had them at Xian Kitchen earlier this year. I think the beef flavor of the “broth” on the bottom in this case, which tasted like bullion, was a little too strong for my taste. The noodles, however, were great.

"So where have you been recently on Convoy, sans Super Sergio's"

Before going further, can we agree that Super Sergio's is absolutely disgusting, and isn't worth mentioning anymore, even as a joke? I know that really low quality mexican fast food can hit the spot, but this is really bottom of the barrel. Same for Rolando's next to it. For as many mexican drive thrus and taco shops that exist in San Diego county and surrounding, this place ranks in the lowest tier. So, so bad. The gristly/pale meat, the straight out of the bag tortillas, that awful red salsa from a jug. It's even moreso crazy that the only mexican food in the Convoy area that gets mentioned is Super Sergio's since Yesenia's and Harvest Taco shop on Clairemont Mesa are just a mile away, and are among the best taco shops not just in the area but in all of San Diego. Harvest Taco's california burrito is a thing of beauty. Their tortillas are always grilled up, the rice and beans are great, and they give you fresh tortilla chips with your order. Salsa bar, roasted chiles. Same for Yesenia's. Imagine, a place that actually cooks the carne asada to order, as opposed to scooping pre-cooked meat out of a bucket. If looking for taco shop fare, I'd put those two shops up against anything in San Diego.

Please, please, please let the Super Sergio's gimmick die. Life is too short.

                          Back to the thread...

                          - I like Phoung Trang for the non-Pho dishes - cha gio with mint, beef with lemongrass
                          - Dede's for Cumin lamb
                          - Dumpling Inn for dumplings, chinese greens, szechuan pork with dried bean curd, kung pao seabass
                          - Anything at Yakyudori/Hinotez - Nagoya ramen is just perfect, best chicken karaage (double fried, potato starch)
                          - Sushi Yaro for the sushi rolls and beer thing
                          - Nijiya market for takeout food from the fridge and specialty items
                          - Mitsuwa market for specialty items like Taberu Rayu, ground pork, produce, good rice, sake, soy, etc.
                          - Pho Mignon for ribeye pho (more traditional pho down in Linda Vista - love the pho at Pho Hoa Hiep)
                          - O'Briens for non-asian, although long gone are the glory days when you could always get an Alpine beer on tap
                          - Oton for robataya, sukiyaki, small plates

                          - Raki Raki for a great bowl of both the chicken and pork ramen. Much prefer the karaage at Yakyudori/Hinotez and Nishiki.
                          - Nishiki for tantanmen. The karaage here is really nice and tender/juicy. A nice contrast to the super crispy kind at Yakyudori/Hinotez, which I still like better.

Hey cookieshoes thanks for posting, yah only interested in Asian places on this thread.

Convoy is just a treasure trove of some excellent small mom & pop shop places. I've also seen a lot up on El Cajon Blvd. I'm going to begin a quest and, when I'm hungry and in either area, just pull in to a place and give it a go. The smaller the better.

If you want some excellent Hunan, try Village Kitchen, next to Little Sheep Hot Pot on Claremont Mesa. Pretty good chow!

6 year old son loves this place. Nice selection of banchan, something like 10 or 12 come out right when you sit down. As for meats, I'm a novice, and have only had Korean BBQ at one other place that used charcoal up in LA. I much prefer that than the gas at Taegugki. As I've only done the AYCE lunches there, I find the meat of decent quality, good portions, and they keep it coming which is good because my son can eat about twice as much as I can. It can get pretty loud in there. Decent selection of beers. Do love the macaroon ice-cream sandwiches for dessert (and have been known to pop in just for that after shopping at Zion). Would be interested to see how it stacks up to other places in San Diego.

Sometime you might like to try Dae Jang Keum (DJK), which is just off Convoy on Engineer, for Korean table-top grilling over real charcoal. That's my personal favorite Korean restaurant in the Convoy area. Wherever you sit in the restaurant, you'll leave smelling like smoke for the next six hours.

I'm beginning to crave some Korean BBQ. Like that it's real charcoal and not gas fired, huge difference. Surprised as SD can be very difficult about

Spicy House (not to be, but easily could be, confused with Spicy City) is a place I hadn't been to in ages until tonight, having struck out with going to Char House on Balboa, which appears to have closed. A medium-sized, fairly plain place, with decent acoustics (yay) and an extensive menu. It's a popular place, and was already packed (and backed up) when I left at 7 pm.

I can't at all recall what I've had there before, but tonight I ordered Szechuan Fish. It was pretty tasty, although the very tender but firm white fish (no idea what kind) was literally "swimming" (if you will) in chili oil, with bean sprouts under the fish and a few chopped scallions, garlic, etc. The huge, shallow bowl was covered with slightly-cooked red chilies. Comes with rice and would easily feed two, but it's not for those who readily get enchilado.

There's no shortage of (ahem) "not-so-hot" dishes on the menu, though, such as chicken with black bean sauce and the like. I left a happy camper, stuffado if not enchilado, given that I like spicy food.

Love Convoy. I love the stalls at the Mitsuwa grocery store and Emerald for dimsum. And Sam Woo at Ranch 99. These three may not be the best but been eating here since college and maybe its nostalgia holding me back from trying the different recommendations in this thread.

I wish someone could organize a Convoy food crawl.

i was in the mood for some Cambodian Food, I know what Cambodian ?? YUP!!, went to Ly Heng on the corner of University and Highland.

Good menu, i ordered Beef Lok Lak or in some Cambodian Restaurants Loc Lac. Tender pieces of marinated beef served with tomatoes, cucumbers and grilled onions and steamed rice $13.00. Savory and sweet, the beef was perfectly cooked. All of their entrees come with pork bone soup, the soup broth was excellent with pieces of pork bone and some chicken bone with some residual meat on them. Take note Doc Chow, this place is worth the trip just for the soup.

I added some chili oil, actually lots of chili oil and samba as a spicy dipping sauce.

Mostly all Cambodian folks were dining with their families, a good sign.

I should have taken some home, but it tasted great and I nibbled away at it.

Note: They're close everyday from 3pm-5pm.

I was in the mood for some Laotian chow today so I went to Ban Lao on University.

I ordered the Lao Cry Tiger beef dish $9.95, it was the NY Strip Sirloin cut of beef, cooked med rare (perfect!) thinly sliced accompanied with a spicy cilantro fresh chili and a hint of mango just to take the edge off salsa.

As usual, I asked for the spicy dish to have an additional kick of spice. Not only was there added fresh thinly sliced chili in the dish, but if you look at the top of the plate you'll see the chef gave me some whole fresh chili's (even more perfect!!) Look at those colorful gems. Take a look Doc Chow.

Take note they do not accept credit cards, cash only.

I'll be back to explore other menu options. Prices are reasonable.

It's a great place, nice and clean, friendly service and parking!! Yes parking on Convoy.

I ordered their Beef Brisket in broth with housemaid 'ripped' noodles. The dish can be ordered spicy or mild, I chose spicy. The broth had a deep flavor, a nice bone broth. The dish came with medium pieces of tender beef brisket, baby bok choy, green onion and the noodles. The noodles were like a thicker papperdelle style, some were very wide, others a bit thinner. The noodles had a nice chew (tooth), what you'd expect in a housemate noodle. The dish was just outstanding, my only suggestion (for myself() was to have asked for extra spicy. I think they played it safe with me, but not next time. This was a huge bowl and a value at $9.49.

I needed to support the Asian Restaurant scene this week. Too much hideous news media hype (enough said).

The good news, the place was about half filled.

I ventured to Pho Duyen Mai on Kearny Villa Rd, just off Clairemont Mesa Blvd by the 163.

I ordered the from Speciality Section:

Hue Spicy Lemongrass Beef Soup. Extra chili oil on the side (yup Doc!)

What a flavorful dish, thin slices of beef, a shank bone with meat on it, some melt in your mouth tendon pieces, just yum !!

Very friendly owner, I had a nice chat with her at the checkout counter.

                                                Mouth watering pics.

                                                Enjoy and giv’m a try

                                                  I hear you, cstr, and have been doing the same. I can't eat Asian every day, but recently have been doing so as much as possible. (I still haven't been to Woomiok Korean for that beef bone soup, BTW, but will go when I'm *very* hungry.}

I've been to Pho Duyen Mai and enjoyed whatever I had IIRC. (Don't recall what.) So many Asian restaurants on and around Convoy, and I can't get to all of them frequently! (if at all.) But I also recommend this place based on memory.

I guess you always order extra chili oil (or the equivalent) when you go to such places? I should really do the same. I can at least ask, try a little, and if I don't like the flavor that it adds, just leave the rest. But usually it's pretty clear which dishes will be even tastier with more (possibly different) chili flavor.

The restaurant community is hurting, especially the Asian places. I continue to support the locals who put their life into serving their recipes with us.

So it’s not NO, just plugging along trying to post some of our gems in the area.

Hi all, I went to Phuong Trang, on Convoy, yesterday.

                                                      First the good news:

I ordered Bun Bo Hue, Sliced beef, pork leg, tendon in a spicy broth. Extra chili oil, naturally.

This was very flavorful, melt in your mouth tendon, thin sliced beef and the broth, just excellent.

All of the servers were very friendly and eager to feed me.

                                                      Now the bad news:

The parking lot was about 1/3 full, very unusual for a convoy parking lot on a Saturday, no in fact most days.

The restaurant had one other couple and me, when I was ready to leave one other couple came in.

As I headed for the 52, I checked other restaurants in small strip mall areas. Parking lots pretty much the same, very few cars.

I’m glad I made it there, clearly those restaurants need for us to patronize them.

It's curious because we almost went to Phuong Trang for lunch today; just saw your post a short time ago. (We ended up at Pho Hoa.) Until the new Saigon restaurant opens in Linda Vista, Phuong Trang has the most expansive Vietnamese offerings in the area. I also like their bun bo hue, and while perhaps it's not as "authentic" as that at Mien Trung, it's very good in its own right. I just have to get into the habit of asking for extra chili oil, as you routinely do, because they don't add nearly enough otherwise.

I agree with your comments about restaurant attendance, and today the governor said that 1/3 full is what he wants to see everywhere. But can restaurants long survive with low patronage like that?

                                                          Yes, chili oil !!

IMO, the short answer, for restaurant survival in our current situation, is NO. I'm not sure the majority of the family owned 'smalls' have the resources to stay open if this ban is lengthy.

I'm going to keep doing my part to support the 'smalls'.

My question was actually rhetorical, but I agree. I'm afraid that for some restaurants, especially the small ones, the menu of the day could end up being "Toast". Hard to believe that things have come to this, so fast, and maybe also so unnecessary.

I hope when life returns that all of Convoy will rise from the ashes with the same pulse and dynamic, and have the same momentum that it had just a few short (no, actually very long) months ago.

Good to hear from you, cstr, and glad you had such a delightful-sounding meal at Woomiok. I haven't been to Convoy since the shutdown, but since you say most restaurants there are open for sit-down now, I'm ready!

Turns out that my favorite (as you know) pho place, Pho Hoa in LV, opened for sit-down over the weekend and I went this afternoon for lunch. I ordered pho tai. Broth was as good and scalding hot as always but the beef slices were cooked when the bowl arrived, not raw. Probably some re-opening restriction; not a complaint. I was a very happy camper after all this time. Very friendly staff were happy to see me -- like your experience at Woomiok.

We need to support these small, non corporate, family run places, they've suffered greatly through all of this. Even doing take out wasn't enough to pay the staff, but I'm thankful they're back open and ready to serve.

BTW - I felt very safe and had no concerns about dining in.
