converting reluctant boyfriend to Jewish food

Kate | Oct 14, 2005 04:03 AM

My boyfriend has a Cape Malay background, and try as I might, I've been unable to give him an enjoyment of Jewish foods. He complains that everything I've fed him has tasted strange (read: pickled!) or bland and heavy. Now, there is an element of truth to this; Eastern European food tends to be heavy, stick-to-the-ribs stuff, and I'm sure part of my enjoyment is the fact that I grew up with this food. Comforting, yes. interesting and exotic like Chinese or Indian food - no. So, what should I cook for him? He liked matzo balls (though claimed Jewish chicken soup was 'boring'), and reacted negatively to brisket, tsimmes, gefilte fish and herring.

I guess I need some very flavourful suggestions. Thanks.
