convert box cake mix recipe to homemade?

I want to make that amazing Midori Melon cake circa 1979 for St. Pat's day, but the recipe starts with a box cake mix which I am loathe to use. I have a white cake recipe I've used for years with everything from amaretto to orange juice for the liquid, so I think I can sub Midori in that just fine, but what to do about the pudding element? The Midori cake recipe calls for a box of pistachio pudding and having never used box pudding in a homemade cake, I'm not sure how that's going to go.
Any advice or suggestions?

The other recipe I considered is "Irish Car Bomb Cake" which is not green, but still, points for crazy, right? It's got whiskey in the batter, Guinness caramel filling and Bailey's icing. Yum.
