My emphasis is on quality of both the congee and ingredients, rather than price. My family prefers North York, Richmond Hill, and Markham but I welcome suggestions anywhere. I read http://www.blogto.com/toronto/the_bes... but fear that it may be outdated.
We used to like Congee Queen at the intersection of Don Mills Rd and Steeles Ave E, but a recent visit proved disappointingly obnoxious and noxiously unsavoury, as deplored at http://www.yelp.ca/biz/congee-queen-n.... I'll explain with just 2 dishes.
We ordered the Congee with Sliced Fish and Cilantro (Please forgive me if I misidentified the herb, notwithstanding http://www.epicurious.com/articlesgui...), but as expressed in the above Yelp review, the fish tasted distastefully 'fishy'. The menu didn't reveal the type of fish, but I suspect that a cheap, vile, frozen kind was used.
The pan-fried turnip patties tasted satisfactory, but to the shock of my pescetarian family, they were cooked with pork, likely a cheap way to enhance taste, but suggestive of failure of skill and of a cover-up thereof.
