Several weeks ago someone was inquiring about the dining scene in Columbia, SC. I was there over the weekend and felt embarrassed that I had overlooked one of the places that best fits the description of a Chowhound find.
There is a local burger chain called Rush's that pre-dates the time that McDonald's invaded the marketplace in Columbia back in the 70s. Lots of medium sized Souther Cities had this kind of place. But, very few, except Rushes have survived.
I was on my way to meet a group of friends to watch spring practice at USC, so I stopped and picked up a bag of Rush's chesseburgers and Chili-Cheeseburgers. They got scarfed down pretty quickly.
These burgers really shouldn't be confused with fast food because they are a step above. IMO, they compare favorably with the burgers at What a Burger in the southwest and In n Out on the west coast.
The burgers are cooked fresh, dressed with crisy fresh toppings and are excellent.
Rush's is a great recommendation for a good quick meal when you're in the Columbia area.
