Coffee ... Is it just a West Coast thing?

Speaking of donuts ...

I started a cappuchino crawl last spring in SF and out of the 14 places I tried, only two of those served the same type of coffee. Eight of those were local roasters.

Now I'm doing my tour of farmers markets and by my count I've tried 15 different local coffee roasters.

Is this just a West Coast thing? Or do other cities in the country have lots of local coffee roasters?

On a trip to CT/NY last November with a stop in Chicago and it seemed that the chains reigned. It was a short trip, so I may have missed some good brews.

However, when I look at some of the boards in the other areas of the country, all I'm seeing is Costco, Pete's, DD and Starbucks. I stayed at the Waldorf Astoria and they seemed proud to be serving Maxwell House.
