116 Crown St. in New Haven is definitely on the cutting edge in New Haven for exotic and tasty cocktails. We've been there for drinks twice and had a great time both times.
On Tuesday night, we tried a hot cocktail (the name of which escapes me) that had gin, chartreuse, honey and a tied ball of tea that opened like a flower as it steeped. Tasted like a high-style, boozy herbal tea - and very welcome on a cold winter's night. We also had the "Dr. No," which is similar to a Vesper but with a cirtusy bisongrass vodka.
On a previous trip, right after the fire in the neighborhod, we had the Elm City Iced Tea, which also has gin and some kind of actual tea in it, and the Grand Prix, which has gin, grapefruit juice and spices.
We also sampled some fabulous food. The short ribs and mussels are especially tasty, and the cheese selection was interesting and yumy. They did need to serve more bread with the food, though - we had to ask a couple times for refills.
Tuesday night's service was neglectful and petulant - the waiter seemed annoyed that we only had one drink and a little cheese plate to nosh on, and he was not at all helpful about making selections. Service on the previous trip was more attentive and knowledgeable.
