I've been to the new pupusaria in Novato a couple of times now (Cocina Antigua) and I'm not quite sure what to make of it. On the first trip, I ordered 21 pupusas to take to my dad's place in Rohnert Park and they ended up not traveling very well. Since they come 3 to an order I had to place 7 orders but requested the pupusas, curtido, and salsa by be packaged as one order. By the time we were ready to eat, the steam from all the pupusas left them soggy and falling apart. They did however crisp up nicely after letting them cool and reheating them on the grill top.

The second trip was for their special tamales. At $5 a pop, they are a bit pricy, but they are on the large side. We ordered a half dozen of the Tamal de Papa (potato) and a half dozen of the Tamal Arroz (rice) to take home. The potato masa was almost like beans with chunks of potato in it, stuffed with a meager piece of bone-in chicken, whole green olives (pit included), and a couple of slices of jalapeno. Very tasty but they had a very loose consistency. The rice masa was also quite different than what I have had in the past. Typically the masa is blended smooth, but with these, you could actually see the individual grains of rice. The filling was similar to the Tamal de Papa. Tasty enough, but it was more like eating arroz con pollo than tamales. One of my guilty pleases is frying up leftover tamales in a bit of oil for breakfast the next day, but these did not hold up at all.

Cocina Antigua has other things on its permanent and specials menus, but as you can see in the pictures below the layout is rather strange as some items have prices included while others do not. They also have a small market next door. The Owner seems nice, and I want to come back to try more things but I really don’t quite know what to make of the place. They do have limited indoor seating, FWIW.
