Went to Cleveland for the first time over the weekend and had a wonderful time. While the highlight of the trip should have been the wedding we were attending, it was our trip to the West Side Market that tops the list.
First off, this place is the real thing...not a new-age creation to please the upwardly mobile and not really geared to tourists. The butchers and bakers were selling top notch food to real shoppers. Lots of great cuts of meat, amazing variety of sausages, and at least two dairies selling fresh cups of buttermilk (the cup I bought cost me only 25 cents!).
I even found pickled eggs that were some of the best I've had. The brine included beet juice (the eggs are a wonderful purple color) for a nice balance of sweet with the vinegar sour. Too bad many of the taverns in Wisconsin have long since done away with their own house made versions. Sorry folks, I can't find the paper where I wrote down the name of the dairy that had them but it was near the NW corner of the building.
Judging by the bustling crowds the market is popular with a wide variety of shoppers. Makes me hope the plans for a public market in Milwaukee gel in the next few months.
What a gem.
