Cleaning an ignored pro panini press

Midlife | Feb 15, 2015 11:22 AM

This is a Waring Commercial Panini superior press that is used where I work part time. I think, because none of the chefs know how to clean it properly, it has built up so much residue that making a panini is difficult now. Black char is evident on anything you make in it and it just doesn't get the bread crispy before the cheese is all oozed out, even at higher temps.

I'm reluctant to try anything abrasive on it but it just can't be left the way it is and previous attempts by others haven't really worked. It doesn't appear as if the plates are removable, so what to do??? Help from anywhere is appreciated, but especially from people with pro kitchen experience with these things.
