Claremont area

Greg Reg | May 17, 200504:58 PM

So we're moving to the Claremont area from Edison, NJ (land of great Indian food), and before that, NYC, and are eager to find the chowish spots nearby. Particularly interested in spots with a good quality/price balance. Atmosphere is of minimal importance -- just basic cleanliness will do. Bonus points for take-out & delivery.

On my list so far:
- We've heard rumors of good pho in Pomona
- I found Chino Wayne's listing of area BBQ joints
- Is Ruen Pair Thai in Pomona really an outgrowth of the legendary Berkeley joint?
- Definitely looking forward to the area's ice cream

What about in Claremont proper -- any recommendations? Are Viva Madrid and Walter's any good? What about that Delhi Palace place?

And where to go for good, relatively light Mexican?? (Caveat: I'm a lifelong East Coaster, which means I know less than zero about Mexican food, other than that I often find bean-based Tex-Mex quite heavy.)

Any Chinese places around that are decent, or will we just need to suck it up & schlep to Monterey Park?

And should I mourn the recent closing of Wolfgang Puck's Cafe at Ontario Mills? (Even if it was decent, I can't imagine it was very chowish...)

Other suggestions welcome -- including for nearby fresh, cheap produce (Asian markets?), fish, meat & poultry (ideally with minimal use of antibiotics, hormones, etc.), and Latin, East Asian & South Asian groceries.

PS - For creative, contemporary cooking (again, preferably at reasonable prices), am I essentially looking at a 40-minute drive to Pasadena or LA?
