While vacationing in Boston recently I had an opportunity to have fried clams on a few occasions....here's the skinny (?) on my trip.
Shortly after arriving at my sister place in Saugus, I headed out to Kelly's, I could wait no longer! Though they were better than any fried clams I've had in LA, they were slightly over-cooked & too gritty however the bellies were large. After a couple days I had dinner plans at The Summer Shack. My meal included chowder, steamers, half-shell clams, fried clams & salad (yes, MY meal!). I have to say.....they were all delicious! The fried clams were fried just right, GBC, nice size bellies & zero grit. Everything I had was great......SO had a lobster w/all the fixings & it was terrific as well (does anyone know what's up w/the had boiled egg served w/the lobster dinner?). My last(sigh) fried clam experience came after a trip to Portsmouth.....I decided to stop at the Clam Box in Ipswich...I figured I'd go right to the source. I must say I was dissapointed w/these clams. Though they were cooked well, the bellies were too small & dissapointing. Perhaps it was just a small batch, too bad though. I don't think I'll have an opportunity to return to NE for another year! (Boo Hoo)
