rather civilized lunch at Finale

It's not what I think of as a classic chowhound find, but I've lately been pretty impressed with the lunches at Finale in Harvard Square. It's mainly sandwiches and salads, with a couple soups of the day. So far, the roasted chicken sandwich is my favorite: good roast chicken on country white bread with arugula, jack cheese, VERY good pickled red onions, and a nice mayo/mustard spread. It's not a sandwich to blow anyone's socks off, but the ingredients are all high-quality, and those pickled onions definitely lift it to a higher level. I think it's 6.50/ or about 3.50 for a half sandwich. I've also had a very nice roasted vegetable sandwich there, a good BLT, and a nice chicken salad. And a very good upscale chef's salad. (They do a nice job with salads -- good greens, very lightly dressed.)

It's also a very comfortable place to sit -- you order at the counter and then sit in one of two rooms and they bring your order to you. It's highly civilized. If I were just getting a take-out sandwich, I'd give the nod (in Hvd Sq.) to Hi-Rise and Darwin's. But for eating in, Finale is a lot less hectic, and the food is surprisingly good. I haven't had most of their desserts beyond an overpriced, underwhelming chocolate-chip cookie, so I can't comment on those. Well, they do look very pretty in the display.

It's at 30 Dunster St., at the corner of Mt. Auburn St., under Holyoke Center.
