Signs are mounting that the poor food, lackadaisical service and mediocre tap beers are catching up with City Lighting (Flatbush Ave & Prospect Pl).
I want to like this place--the space is funky and a decent beer-and-burger joint in the neighborhood could be such a pleasure. But whenever it seems City Lighting starts getting things almost right, they promptly take a bunch of steps backward.
About a week ago, I gave the place another chance, after a month or so interlude since my last visit. Tried the fried mushroom appetizer. Awful. Hard as rocks and fried in old oil that spoiled what little flavor the shriveled mushroom might have once had. The chipotle mayonnaise on the side was uninspiring.
My burger was bland and pitifully overcooked, despite my request for medium.
Worst of all, nobody's paying adequate attention to the beer taps and lines. The drafts are too often skanky, flat or both. Stick with bottles.
And those signs of trouble have become literal. The joint is plastered with beer promos and special food deals to reel people in. They couldn't pay me to eat or drink this stuff.
My recommendation: Walk a few blocks to Soda on Vanderbilt.
