City Island Diner dishes out lots of local color...

For me it's like being back in the old neighborhood. Whenever I pop into the City Island Diner on City Island Ave., Bronx, and take a seat at the counter. I like to sit opposite the cook and watch him prepare those omelets with infinite fillings and grilled items with aplomb. Stopped in for a late breakfast recently and the place was jumping with locals. Orders being called out, waiters rushing about, platters of food being delivered to the tables. I had a yen for good old-fashioned Corned Beef Hash topped with a couple of eggs over easy, and a big portion of home fries. Oh, yes, buttered rye toast for me, too. And a cup of endless coffee.

City Island Diner is a gem, a throwback to what things used to be like. Strewn with pictures, signs and local announcements. Specialty menus hanging on the wall. A place to relax in the middle of the hubbub. And a real friendly staff eager to pour you that extra cup...

Any memories to share?
