The Cinncinati Five Way Chili controversy

Ric | May 27, 2002 05:04 PM

I am diving into the grilling season, determined to explore the wide and wonderful range of the nation's hot dog tastes, and I ran into an interesting "difference of opinion" by a few fans of the Cinncinati Chili Dogs. To those who are experts in
such things, I ask you, are red kidney beans an ingredient or not? And is there some "history" about how this came to be? At least one person on the web (elsewhere- hey, if it's not on Chowhound, how reliable can it be?) emphatically says that kidney beans are an abomination and that the real ingredients to be used here, are oyster crackers!
Looking forward to all the Cinncinati chili dog experts' thoughful replies.
Thanks. It's gonna be a great summer!
Ric
