Cinnamon sticks in Indian cooking

blustery | Jan 25, 201610:44 PM     7

I love to cook Indian food, though no expert. I was watching Alamelu (love her) on utube and saw that she was using slivers of cinnamon stick. When I have used cinammon sticks I always kept them whole because I am concerned about the sharp edges if swallowed. Are the slivers removed before eating? I know the question sounds silly, but if it is not safe to swallow part of a sliver, should just a whole one be used always?
