Cinco Nachos

Texas Nachos

The best cinco nachos in America are at Fuentes Cafe at the corner of Beaureguard and Chadbourne in San Angelo, Texas. Bar none. Beans are great. Toppings supurb. And they dont count em. Just pile em up. We drive many miles to eat these.

      Hi Pat,
I lived in San Angelo for most of the 70's and frequented Fuentes quite often, feasting on their fabulous cinco nachos!
I remember them well and have never found better anywhere.
I live in Little Rock now and think of Fuentes every time I have a craving for Texmex. The next time you are there, have a nacho for me!

        What are cinco nachos?

Is that perhaps a "Mexicanized" name for the kind of nachos that involve taking a platterfull of cold corn chips and topping them with glops of everything but the kitchen cinco?

Oh my gosh, you've helped me understand the whole Cinco de Mayo thing!

I never could figure out why there was a big holiday celebrating "The Sinks of May"! I thought perhaps it was in honor of the people of Puebla who, for May Day, fill their sinks with tequila!

But still, it seemed so odd.

            ¿Verdad?

As it was explained to me, cinco nachos have five toppings. An example would be refried beans, meat, cheese, avocado and tomato. My experience has always been that jalapenos were included but not counted as one of the five toppings. Depending upon who is making them, the combination of the five ingredients vary and may include sour cream, smoked chicken, fish, shrimp, etc.

Or the 'pile of cold chips with stuff dumped over' style?

Here's the menu to Fuentes Café. They also have regular Texas style cheese nachos. The portions look kinda small though. Who eats a 6 ounce chicken fried steak?

            The cinco nachos look terrible.

Out here in our part of Texas, cincos are usually homemade chips with beef, beans and cheese broiled until melted, then topped with guacamole, tomatoes and maybe sour cream. Jalapenos can be added either during the broiling stage or after.

OR, it can be any of the above topped with cheese and then broiled until melted.

Either way they're delicious, and not even close to terrible.
