After five visits, I've come to the conclusion the Cidadee Cafe in Ossining is arguably the best bakery in Westchester and definitely the best value bakery in the county. The custard-based Portuguese pastries are sublime: beautiful dark spots on top of the custard providing a slightly bitter counterpoint to the pastry's sweetness. My wife loves the Portuguese-style napolean though it's tough to finish in one sitting. We've also tried the almond pastry, almost like mini-muffins, some with pineapple: perfectly most, a little sticky, delicious and filling.
My daughter and I went for breakfast today: cappuccino, custard pastry, ham and cheese panini, almond pastry and seven pastries to go for the rest of the family.
total cost: $19
The staff is friendly, patient and will spend time explaining what's in each pastry. IMO, this is a must-try bakery. Half the fun is trying all the varieties, be sure to take home an assorted box to figure out what you like the most.
