Churn Urban Creamery | Portola District - San Francisco

Churn Urban Creamery morphed from pop-ups to a storefront last summer. The location is the former Johnson's BBQ (https://www.chowhound.com/post/pays-l...), vacant since Chef Joe Johnson's passing in 2011. I had a chance to try Churn during its first week. It was cool to see the marquee on the neighboring theater devoted to welcoming the new business.

Starting out with eight flavors in the case, half of them vegan, Churn produces from scratch with organic ingredients. It has its own pasteurizer and does not use the Straus base that many of the City's ice cream producers rely upon. Without gums or eggs as emulsifiers, the slow-churned small batches have remarkably creamy texture, even the non-dairy ones. After tasting them all, the other notable characteristic is the lower sweetness level. Fresh flavors are true and intense, transmitted cleanly without the emulsifiers or excess of butterfat. I especially loved the vegan Matcha flavor made with coconut milk. While the flavor of the coconut base comes through, it's quite complimentary to the concentrated green tea powder.

Anyone else tried it yet?
