Normally I’m just a foodie that does my own thing. This week however I was invited by a friend to join her at a Church for dinner. Usually I go to such affairs with reluctance because the food is generally lacking (although, I’m not a food snob, street and fair foods are alright in my book – fair food in moderation, of course). Then she tells me that the menu tonight is vegetarian (how nice – snark). So I meet up with her at the parking lot of the Church at 7th Av and Glendale.
It gets kind of like a spy novel from here. We travel from the parking lot, around the building, and down the sidewalk (actually, it’s a little creepy – but hey, she knows where she’s going). When we enter the hall (looks like a little theatre lobby) there is a woman with a cash box. She says tonight’s’ menu is Asian Salad with Egg Roll and its 5 bucks for adults. Ok, I’m game.
We walk into the kitchen area and there is a tub (I’m not kidding) of salad. It has mostly recognizable stuff in there and some bizarre things. The woman at the counter says in the salad there is iceberg lettuce, mixed greens, mandarin oranges, lotus root, daikon radish, sweet pea shoots, bamboo shoots, bean sprouts, and tong-ho (which she says is edible chrysanthemum). Yeah, I had to go back and make her repeat it so I could write it all down. Next to the salad are dressings that are in squeeze bottles, I’m told that the dressings are homemade; ginger-lime, peanut-sesame, and soy vinaigrette (there was a bottle of ranch there too). Moving down the line are egg rolls that are just coming out of the fryer, I’m told they were made this morning. There is Chinese hot mustard and sweet & sour there too. Well let me tell you, the dressings I had (ginger and peanut) totally complimented the salads (yea, I had two). The people were very friendly and if you don’t mind taking a break from your meal for a prayer (the pastor offers a prayer at the meal). It’s worth going to.
