We dined at Chung King tonight, following Sadistick's recent recommendation, and juno's subsequent nod, in the following thread: https://www.chowhound.com/post/northe... . Our meal was so good I felt the restaurant deserves its own thread.
We ordered everything Sadistick mentioned -- hot and sour soup, Moo Shu Pork, (wonderfully crispy) Szechuan Shredded Beef, and Shrimp in Preserved Orange Peel. All were excellent. Our party also ordered wonton soup, spring rolls, Spicy Szechuan Wonton, Spiced Chicken in Garlic Peanut Sauce, and Dry Sauteed Green Beans. The only disappointment were the Szechuan wonton; the drizzled-over sauce was one-dimensional and unremarkable. I'd like to try the 2-course Peking duck next time we go.
It's definitely the best American-style Sichuan food we've had in many years. Yes, it's a bit of a shlep from Cabbagetown but well worth the drive.
The restaurant was quite empty except for one small and one very large party when we were there beginning at around 7 pm, on a Sunday night. People who trust yelp "reviews" would definitely stay away. The brutal write-ups have me suspecting that competitors, or just nasty people, are intentionally badmouthing this establishment. Despite reports to the contrary, service was wonderful and the food arrived in a timely fashion.
