Chung Ki Wah - downhill?

Sonia | Jul 21, 200412:27 AM

Went last night for their famed naeng myun. The same one I wrote about so lovingly about 2 years ago. I doubt anyone remembers. Anyway, the story goes, Chung Ki Wah reputed to have the best mul naeng myun in town, well recognized among Koreans in the know, including my mom, best noodles, best broth, free extra noodles, blah blah blah.

Not anymore. From start to finish, it just plain sucked. Salad of REALLY tough, downright leathery romaine & green leaf with a rank dressing. Beef broth (yook su) not seasoned properly and having a sickly, unwholesome smell. Naeng myun noodles unnecessarily chewy & a bit undercooked, broth too sweet and lacking any tanginess whatsoever that could not be remedied with dubious amounts of vinegar & mustard. The mustard, I was convinced, was really old because it had no punch at all. No mustardiness. I think I ended up adding about 1/4 cup of mustard before finally realizing this & giving up. 3-4 slices of meat that was much too fatty to be a proper naeng myun meat. Call me negative, but I can't say one nice thing about the meal. To top it off, waitress damn near throws the check on the far side of the table.

An off night? I don't know. I hadn't been there in over a year. Despite their good reputation, they are notoriously inconsistent. And their good reputation apparently survives because there were no fewer than 5 parties waiting as I was leaving at around 7.

Oh well, time to scout for a new naeng myun favorite.
