In my continuing quest for quality BBQ in OC, there was one restaurant that has been on my list for quite awhile, and I thought that I had been there at least once, but it turns out I hadn't. Craving the Q, especially beef ribs Q, since the last few places I've visited only had pork ribs Q, I decided to head out for lunch to Chris and Pitts in Fountain Valley.
The service was a little bit slow, as it seemed like there were not enough waitresses overseeing too many tables, with no hostess to greet and seat me. The sign said to seat myself, so I did. I waited around 5 minutes before a waitress finally got to my table. I ordered the lunch plate of beef ribs.
Salad came first, in a little bowl. Then came my entree, 4 big beef ribs, with sides of mashed potatoes and garlic bread. Not quite fall of the bone tender, the beef ribs were still quite tasty, and there was a fair amount of meat on each piece. Still not quite as good as Joey's BBQ, which recently set a new standard for me for beef ribs. Garlic toast was decent, and the mashed potatoes were better than expected, if a little bit skimpy on the gravy.
What surprised me was the price, which was $9.95 for the 4 beef rib lunch plate, quite a bargain for what I got. Joey's was better quality-wise, but a somewhat pricier $15.95 for only 3 beef ribs.
I believe there are 5 other Chris and Pitts BBQ restaurants scattered around LA and OC, though I have read that some of them have closed. The Yellow Pages list Anaheim, Bellflower, Whitter, Downey, and Bell Gardens as locations for their other restaurants.
Chris and Pitts offers decent BBQ at a reasonable price, especially one that offers beef ribs, which seems to be served less and less in more BBQ places that I check out in OC and whenever I travel to LA county. Because it's one of the few places in OC to offer decent beef ribs, it will become one of my regular restaurant rotation visits whenever I'm craving the Q.
