N.Y. novice looking for N.Y. originals | Jan 12, 2005 08:46 PM

L.A. chowhounds are coming to N.Y. for a long weekend, staying midtown but will traverse the island for good chow. I've spend very little time in Manhattan in my life, so I'm looking for a few "only in New York" suggestions, preferably on the cheap side. Not interested in the likes of Per Se et al, but please give recs for best bagels, best dive bars, best pizza, and anything else you feel is a New York original. Where would you take friends who had never been here before? What would you miss most if you left? (For comparison purposes, places like Langer's and Philippe's, the burger at Father's Office, taco trucks, or Grand Central Market in L.A.)
