Chowish outings around Scottsdale/Phoenix?

Carb Lover | Nov 22, 2005 02:58 PM

Hi AZ hounds! I'll be visiting from NoCal over the T-giving weekend and am seeking chow-related outings. I'll be staying at my sis's house in N. Scottsdale (forget her streets) and will have intermittent access to a car.

What I mean by "outings" are places (not necessarily restaurants) that someone who loves to cook, nibble, and browse would have a ball. Places like markets (including farmer's markets), cookware stores, gourmet food vendors, etc. The only thing that I have on my list so far is visiting the Penzey's store since I've heard so much about this brand on CH and don't live near a Penzey's store. Any insider tips about that particular Penzey's outlet?

As far as restaurants, my mom will be cooking up lots of Viet food at home, so I don't think we'll be going out much. I have Los Sombreros in the back of my mind should we want a dining out experience in Scottsdale. Any sit-down, family-oriented Mexican (Americanized fine as long as tasty) restaurant w/ affordable prices?

Here are the nibbles that I'm interested in should that area boast a distinctive gem:

1. Ice cream or gelato
2. Fry bread (savory or sweet) or donuts
3. Place for cocktails and bar food/small plates should we need a little family break.

Thanks for your help, and I will report back w/ anything noteworthy (good or bad)!
