Thank you Chowhounds - Ruan Thai

It will take a few more meals before I can officially consider this my favorite Thai restaurant in the area, but Ruan Thai is off to a promising start.

Last week five of us went to the Uptown (Fellowship of the Ring, extended edition), and then to one couple's home to eat carryout Thai. For some reason, Dusit in Wheaton did not have carryout menus available (do they ever?), so our host popped over to Thai Derm in Silver Spring and we ordered from there. My husband liked his dish, some sort of mild beef and broccoli thing, but the rest of us were thoroughly unimpressed. Soy sauce is supposed to be a flavoring, not a soup base!

For last night's outing (Two Towers extended edition), I read through the board and decided to steer our group to Ruan Thai. Our group of seven ordered crabmeat & pork-stuffed chicken wings, tom yum goong, tom kha kai, bean thread soup with ground pork, pad khing with beef, squid with chili and basil, duck with chili and basil, pad thai, green curry, grilled pork with "Thai special sauce", and two other dishes that I forgot to note. Not a dud in the bunch. The flavors were nicely balanced, and the kitchen even understands how to cook squid.

Next Saturday is Return Of The King. Hmm, what to try next at Ruan? I'll save the crispy whole fish variations until we can eat on site. Someone here mentioned the stir-fried catfish...
