The first time I ate at Hama-Ko, the big table next to mine was having a spectacle of smells and flavors. I still remember watching them closely, witnessing each course as they were carefully and gracefully brought out to the table and then graciously described. I couldn't taste, but I caught the gentle whiffs from the steamed clams and the crisp shrimpy fragrance from the delicately fried shrimp cakes. I noticed skewers of grilled salmon with faint caramelized edges and a palette of sushi, bright and beautiful. All among a series of delicacies too much to take in. I adored the elegant sushi they served me, but I couldn't help eyeing the next table, feeling somewhat envious.
I would like to experience that for myself before I leave SF for good. And what better way than to share that with fellow chowhounds. Here are the details:

It's going to be a pricey dinner, but I believe it's a good value because a meal of this calibre will likely cost 30-50% more elsewhere (e.g. Sawa, Kyo-ya, Kabuto).
And why am I asking for this apparently hefty $30 contribution to chowhound?
Firstly, this special dinner menu and the reservation that comes with that is usually known and available only to regulars. In addition, many of you know that the quality of service and food and service can vary considerably between a regular and a first-timer at Hama-Ko. I'm offering this as an opportunity to introduce some of you to the folks that run Hama-Ko, so that you don't have to invest hundreds of dollars to become a recognized regular. (I've been eating at Hama-Ko for almost 3 years now, and must have spent over $1,000 on sushi there. I went there once a month for 6 months before I got invited to sit at my now regular spot at the bar.) In this regard $30 is an astronomical discount compared to the time and effort and money that I spent cultivating Hama-Ko.
But more importantly, we would not have been able to eat together or share our experiences about places like Hama-Ko if not for chowhound. Your contribution will be used to offset server and other costs for the chowhound website.
So taken together, a $30 goodwill to chowhound is a bargain for the dining experience and the satisfaction of helping keep Chowhound going. Hopefully and eventually, we'll reach a point where Jim and Bob and the wonderful Chowhound Team can implement many of the features that we have been asking for.
