If you love to compare a favorite dish from restaurant to restaurant, say pad thai, then you might have a problem eating at Baan Thai. The menu does not conform to standard "Thai restaurant" dishes that you will see on every menu. The food here is idiosyncratic and homestyle, with surprisingly little care for plating.
Eight Chowhounds gathered together to order a range of dishes that showed off just how satisfying it can be to depart from the tried and true. This was a remarkable meal.
Chicken stuffed in tapioca skin
Crispy rice cakes
grilled oyster mushroom salad
crispy tilapia salad
grilled beef salad with thai eggplant
vermicelli in chili peanut sauce
egg noodles with roast pork and ground chicken ("dry" version, no soup)
Grilled beef red curry with pineapple and grapes
Spicy stir-fried pork picnic
and two seasonal specialties:
bitter melon curry with mackerel fishballs
pork belly curry with sweet potato leaves
and for dessert: kanom krok, fried coconut milk balls
It was a great array of flavors and I would happily order any of these dishes again. I thought the vermicelli was a bit on the sweet side, so I'd order that only if I had other dishes too. The beef red curry had some very large grapes which helped it stand out. They looked more like giant olives. The branches of green peppercorn in the pork picnic were a nice touch.
Nothing was served very spicy, but the build-up of heat was effective.
A couple of the dishes (stuffed tapioca balls and the dessert) should be eaten as hot as possible, so don't let them cool off.
