Here's the recipe for the English Tea Room's Sweet & Sour Salad dressing that was in the Nov. 25th/Thanksgiving issue of the Boston Globe's Confidential Chat.
But it's not a poppyseed dressing; it has celery seed. What the blurb starts out with is the following: "Person A was looking for the recipe for salad dressing served at the English Team Room on Newbury Street in Boston. She thanks all who sent copies of the recipe. Person B sent this one, printed several yearsa go in Confidential Chat."
The way it was worded, it sounds like their house dressing - is this the one you're looking for? It does sound great! (directions paraphrased from the Globe version.)
English Tea Room's Sweet & Sour Salad Dressing
2/3 cup sugar
1 tsp. dry mustard
1 tsp. paprika
1 tsp. celery seed
1/4 tsp. salt
1 tsp. onion, grated
1/3 cup honey
1 Tbsp. lemon juice
1/3 cup red wine vinegar
1 cup salad oil
Mix together the sugar through salt, and then add the onion. Blend in the honey. In a separate bowl, combine the lemon juice and vinegar, blending it well. Then add it to the rest of the mixture. In a slow stream, add the salad oil, whisking constantly.
Serve with greens, adding red cabbage if desired for color and texture. Makes about 2-1/2 cups dressing.
