Please join me for a North Indian/Pakistani meal at the original Shalimar location in the Tenderloin. When Shalimar opened about 8 years ago, it set off a chain reaction that has resulted in half a dozen similar restaurants opening up in a radius of a few blocks (Pakwan, Naan-n-Curry, Chutney, Lahore Karahi, Little Deli). The area has since been dubbed by the Chronicle the Tandoorloin because of its singularly high concentration of Indian restaurants.
Come see why I think the restaurant that started it all is still the best of the lot. The specialties at Shalimar are the Tandoori dishes (Lamb chops, Seekh Kabab, Chicken Tikka), and they also have very good meat and vegetable curries and Naan.
If you don't eat meat, don't hesitate to come, as there are plenty of vegetarian dishes. And for those who have been to Shalimar before, this is your chance to try some dishes that you may not have had before, such as the Nihari, the Haleem, or the Thursday night goat curry.
The location of the restaurant is not nearly as bad as advertised, as it is exactly one and a half blocks away from the Clift, one of the swankiest hotels in town. If you're walking, the nicest route is to come up Geary from Union Square, and hang a left at Jones. Shalimar will be halfway down the block on your left. Street parking can be challenging, but there are various pay lots in the area, including one across from Shalimar.
Please email me on the link above to RSVP. Here's the restaurant contact info:
