What's new and chow-worthy in the Buffalo area?

tardigrade | May 12, 201508:22 PM 4
New York State (exc. NYC) Buffalo

It's time for my semi-annual trip to the area. Has anything opened since last fall that's worth a visit? I'll be in the Hamburg area mostly, and looking for places my elderly mother will also be comfortable at (she is boycotting Mulberry's for reasons I don't understand, so that's out). I will have access to a car, so other areas are accessible.

There must be some Hounds in WNY: where do you eat?

    Hello, Tardigrade,
Romeo & Juliet's Bakery & Cafe opened a location in Hamburg recently. While I haven't been to this new spot, I've had many fine meals at the original location on Hertel Ave. in North Buffalo.

Have you been to Black Iron Bystro in Blasdell? I've heard good things about the newish spot from friends.

If your mother is not boycotting Mulberry's sister restaurants, the Mulberry's owner and an owner of Brick Oven Bistro (Abbott Road, S.Buffalo) opened the Mess Hall in Lackawanna earlier this year.

I had a great breakfast at Break'n Eggs Creperie on Main St. in Williamsville recently. It was my first crepe experience, and I had two eggs with cheddar cheese in a crepe, with sides of excellent diced and crispy home fries and the freshest fruit in recent memory. Real fruit! Raspberries! The menu has sweet and savory crepes. The spot is small and the tables are close together. Expect a line. Service was excellent.

We did go to Mess Hall for lunch, and I was favorably impressed: it's worth a revisit on my next trip. It's easy to find - it's across the street from one of the ugliest buildings I've ever seen!

We went to Mason's Grille 52 in Hamburg (my sister's choice): it was OK. Trying, but not quite there: the chef needs to learn there are seasonings other than salt. We also went to Liberty Hound at the waterfront: decent salads, good beer selection.

I'll keep Black Iron on the list for the next trip.

There's been a lot of commotion about the new incarnation of Bistro Europa, called The Black Sheep. It is larger, but you will still need a reservation. I loved it:

And Dinosaur BBQ opened in downtown Buffalo in late 2014. Very recommended. Call them about the parking.

For Southtowns, I've been meaning to try the Ebenezer Ale House. It's been around a few years, but I only heard of it recently so maybe you haven't either. Once again, it might be too pub-like for your Mom:

So the two solid tips I can think of now are The Black Sheep and Dinosaur BBQ.
