Chow in SF Chinatown: Gold Mountain Again

Melanie Wong | Nov 20, 2005 01:40 AM

Last week we returned to Gold Mountain again with my parents. This was my first taste of Chinese food in nine days.

Oysters were finally available --- they were sold out the two previous times --- and my father could order fried oysters. Sadly, this dish didn't turn out too well. Likewise, the salt and pepper squid, something was not right at the fry station that night.

The steamed eggs with dried scallop was perfection again. Much better than the dish made with live clams.

The soy sauce chicken recommended by another 'hound was very good. Red at the bone with a firm, thick textured skin, it had a heavier and sweeter taste of dark soy sauce.

The surprise of the night was the prawns with walnuts that Dad insisted on ordering. The prawns were big and sweet, a little crusty on the outside, and so juicy. The kitchen had a light hand with the mayonnaise and was generous with the walnuts. One of the best versions of this dish I've had in a while.
