best chow neighborhoods in Madrid

In a few months, we're moving to Madrid for at least a year.

I was wondering if there are any Madrid-based hounds who had thoughts on which are the best chow neighborhoods, particularly for markets, groceries, etc. I guess I should also mention that we are taking a minor vow of poverty to do this, so we'll be doing most of our chowhounding at the lower end of the dining spectrum...

Right now, I think Lavapies is at the top of our list, given its diversity, central location, cost, etc.

More than anything, I'm just posting this for some inspiration, while we battle out the insanely mundane bureaucratic details of visas, school matriculation, house rental, etc.
