I'm now organizing the second official Rib-athon, to take place next Tuesday, March 9th. We plan to start sometime around 1:00 or 2:00, and hit a few unexplored areas of the far south side, and possibly a couple of places on the west side.
The first Rib-athon in January, lasting 9 hours, went very well, even with an unfixed itinerary and a caravan of three cars. I don't anticipate that this excursion will be as long and exhaustive as the first, since we are going to try to focus on a few unexplored areas of the city, known to be rich in BBQ shacks. But investigating rib shacks is a hit and miss operation, since opening hours are usually vague and many joints have closed permanently without notice. Flexibility will be the key.
Our objective is simply to sample BBQ ribs, rib tips, and hot links across as wide a spectrum of the city as possible. During the last two months, groups of chowhounds have formally and informally investigated over 50 BBQ shacks. While most were either found severely wanting, or were closed outright, the best (and a few of the worst) have been nicely reviewed on this Board during that period.
