I think the Fourth of July is a fun holiday for a lot of reasons. No presents are needed. No one dresses up; in fact dressing like a comfortable teenager is expected. Unlike the winter holidays where most of the country feels cheated out of a beautiful Currier & Ives snow scene, it is usually predictably hot. Everyone eats junk food and unless you got up at 4 a.m. to smoke a brisket, it is not culinarily demanding. During the day there are usually choices like sodas, cold beer (required if tending a smoker), lemonade, and iced tea, but as the sun gets low it is cocktail time. A negroni is always a summer time fave, but a martini is often the perfect accompaniment to beef dishes and spicy sides. An old fashioned seems patriotic. In Texas the margarita is pretty standard. So in the pandemic world it seemed silly to smoke a brisket since a big crowd was out of the question. We will probably end up with burgers and tater tots or French fries. I am undecided as to my cocktail, but at 8:30 a.m. that's probably a good thing. What are you planning to have?
